It was a fiery BeWeave Subscription Box for July

For me and my family July is all about bonfires and toasting marshmallows. One of our favourite activities through winter is sitting around a bonfire with family and friends, watching the flames and listening to the kids count out an even number of pink and white marshmallows to toast. Our wood heater is also our only heating source so building fires and watching the orange and yellow flames flicker becomes a general part of our day. The colours, shadows and flickering are all so mesmerising. I bet you have found yourself lost in the flames of a fire at least once before too.

With all these images in my head, I planned our July box to bring you the brilliant colours of a bonfire. Lets take a look at what made up our BeWeave yarn and fibre box this month.

Recycled Linen – This is a super textured art yarn made from recycled linen. Hand spun and dyed in India you will find this yarn is thick and thin with loose curls which come from the long fibre threads. It is softer then in looks would be suitable for making cool hats and table mats if you wanted to try knitting or crochet with it also.

Rain or Shine DHG Yarn – An extra fine merino yarn that is suitable for any season. Made from non mulesed sheep and Okeo tex certified like all DHG yarns, this ball is perfect for hats, gloves and blankets to name a few non tapestry ideas.

Extra Fine Merino – Capturing all the red, orange and yellows of a bonfire in a single sliver this beautiful blend of colours will enhance your woven techniques.

Tiger silk touch string – 100g of our finest 4mm silk touch macramé string in the fieriest orange tone. . This string is a mix of cotton with bamboo. The bamboo gives it a lovely shimmer and silky feel.

Mustard tape ribbon – A flat squishy, acrylic ribbon tape that weaves beautifully due to its soft composition and thickness.

Wool etamine ribbon – This beautiful ribbon is feather light, and elegant. Etamine is a loosely woven fabric with a similar structure to voile or a mesh. The fabric is made with a plain weave using lightly twisted cotton or wool yarns. This particular ribbon has been cut from larger pieces of fabric and lengths have been joined to create one continuous piece.

Wooden Bobbin – A wooden bobbin for holding ribbons or yarns that also makes the perfect mount for mini weaves. The hole down the center is perfect for threading a hanging string too so you can easily hang your piece.

For the inspiration project I really wanted to capture the essence of flames in a bonfire and also use the wooden bobbin as a mount to showcase how good they look above a woven piece. To do this I measured out a mini weave on my medium tapestry loom and used the combed wool top, silk touch string, wool etamine and the tape ribbon to create a bold and full fiery weave I named flare. For added interest I included some handspun yellow art yarn and a mustard warp which became its own little feature on the bobbin. The piece was made using just tabby and rya techniques.

Would you love to be inspired with a new theme and project each month? You can join the fun by signing up to our BeWeave yarn and fibre subscription box too. Available as a monthly option or save with 3 or 6 months upfront.
