It was all blue for Decembers subscription box

I don’t think there is a shade of blue that I don’t love and there are lots of reasons why it is such a popular colour for many. Did you know that the colour blue has been described as the most universally loved colour?

Blue is a cool shade on the colour wheel. Some of the words associated with blue are tranquillity, security, reliable, peaceful, meditative, calm, soothing, reliable, trustworthy and pure. I could go on and on but I am sure you can see the pattern already and perhaps why it is so popular.

The December Inspiration project

To celebrate the world’s love of blue, for the month of December we are creating with dark blues. Dark blue is often associated with confidence, competence, lasting values, intelligence and wisdom. It is considered a conservative shade which makes it popular in official capacities, think police uniforms and the like.

Let’s explore the dark blue yarns and fibres that appeared in our December 2023 BeWeave yarn and fibre box.

Braided sari – Another new way to explore sari silk. This recycled sari silk ribbon has been hand braided to create a chunky, textured yarn. I love the look of this fun new sari silk.

Printed sari – This classic ivory sari silk ribbon has been printed with an elegant damask pattern in a gorgeous blue. Creating with printed ribbon is such a simple way to add contrast and interest amongst block colours.

Merino/Tussah Silk combed top – Wool and silk blend so well together and the addition of the silk to the already extra soft, extra fine merino makes this combed top silkier than ever. Unlike other silks, Tussah silk is harvested from the cocoons of wild silk worms. Tussah silk has shorter fibres than Mulberry silk and is a popular choice for commercially blended combed tops. This mix of fibre looks beautiful when woven but is also ideal for spinning yarn and making felt.

Stromboli cotton tape – A unique flat cotton ribbon by DHG in a divine navy blue. This cotton tape is stretchy and reminds me of t shirt yarn but a little more luxe. This yarn is designed for crochet and knitting but it works so well with tapestry weaving too and helped create a unique piece as part of our inspiration projects.

Recycled cotton rope - A box staple, cotton rope is a fantastic filler for tapestry weaving whic is why I love to include it, along with string and cord in most of the subscription boxes. Use the rope in fringes with rya or looped ryas or with a simple tabby to highlight the patterns and texture the ply creates.

Sun catcher –. Blue is the colour of dark starry nights and cloudless skies, making this sun and moon catcher the perfect addition to your blue themed BeWeave box. Feel free to use on its own or pair with your fibre art.

Our subscribers loved this box "The blues of December are divine! I adored them" said Kerrie.

For the month of December we had two inspiration projects that featured the hanging crystal sun catcher.

Our first project introduced us to a new way to weave directly onto a thin metal hanger, using one of our adjustable looms and a metal traingle, while our second project was a simple wrapped, geometric piece using only the cotton tape from the box on a large round metal hoop.

The BeWeave Yarn and Fibre subscription box is ideal for tapestry weavers and macra weavers and reopens for new subscribers in May. The waitlist is currently open for those who don't want to miss out on the limited number of boxes avaliable.
